Insurance & Coverage
Insurance & Medi-Cal doula coverage
High-quality doula support should be accessible through more than one path. I work with private-pay families, eligible Medi-Cal members, and select commercial insurance benefits. Because plans and networks change, coverage is verified before services are finalized.
How it works
Four simple steps
Reach out
Share your due date, birth location, insurance plan, and the kind of support you are looking for.
Verify the benefit
We confirm whether I participate with your plan, what your plan covers, and whether any plan-specific steps are required.
Shape the care
If you are using an insurance benefit, visits are structured around the services your plan authorizes. Private-pay options are available when coverage does not apply or when you want services outside the benefit.
Focus on your birth
Once the logistics are clear, our attention goes back where it belongs: preparing for you and your baby.
Medi-Cal doula benefit
What California Medi-Cal covers
California Medi-Cal includes doula services for eligible members in both fee-for-service and managed care. The current core benefit includes:
- One initial 90-minute visit
- Up to eight additional prenatal/postpartum visits
- Support during labor and delivery, including a stillbirth, and support for miscarriage or abortion
- Up to two extended three-hour postpartum visits
- Up to nine additional postpartum visits with an additional recommendation from a licensed practitioner
For Medi-Cal doula coverage, the postpartum period extends up to one year after pregnancy. DHCS has issued a standing recommendation for the initial and core set of services, and managed-care members access the benefit through their Medi-Cal plan.
Benefit rules can change. Coverage is verified before services begin, and current DHCS information is linked from this page.
Commercial insurance
If you have commercial insurance
Some commercial plans include a doula benefit, but coverage varies by plan, employer group, network status, authorization requirements, and member benefits.
If you have commercial insurance, send me the exact plan information when you inquire. Because a plan name alone does not guarantee coverage, I verify the specific product and member benefits before services are finalized.

Coverage questions
Insurance & Medi-Cal, answered
Yes. Under the current Medi-Cal doula benefit, eligible members can receive doula support during pregnancy, labor and birth, and the postpartum period, which extends up to one year after pregnancy. The number and type of visits are set by Medi-Cal and may change over time.
Usually not for the standard Medi-Cal doula benefit. California has a standing recommendation in place for the initial covered services. An additional recommendation may be needed for extra postpartum visits beyond the standard benefit.
Commercial insurance plans may have different requirements, and some may require a referral, recommendation, or prior authorization. I'll verify your plan requirements before services are finalized.
I work with select commercial insurance plans. Coverage varies by plan and member, so I verify your benefits before services begin.
We'll review what your plan includes and, when appropriate, discuss private-pay options for services outside your benefit. You'll know what is covered before deciding how you'd like to structure your support.
Birth photography is a separate private-pay service and is not billed as doula care. If your birth doula support is covered, you can still add photography privately.
Send me your plan + due date
I'll let you know whether I currently participate with your plan and what the next verification step is.
